It was the first time many of us had seen each other in a long while. Though we wished the gathering had been for a different reason, it was wonderful to be together. Zekauskas and grew up in the Zekauskas family’s original home in Kingston, Pennsylvania, next door to her grandmother, Blanche Zekauskas Chernesky—Ann’s eldest sister. Raised in a close-knit, multigenerational household that included her brother, Alan, Susan credits her grandmother; her parents, John and Mary Ann Chernesky; and her many beloved aunts—especially Ann—with nurturing her deep love of cooking and the joy of gathering loved ones around a table of beautiful food. Susan brings more than two decades of leadership experience in nonprofit and association management and development. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English/Writing from La Salle University, where she graduated with honors, and a Master of Science in Communication Management from Temple University, along with a professional certification in editing. She currently serves as President and Board Chair of Saint Mary Interparochial School, a K–8 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence located in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic district. A committed civic volunteer, Susan is a Democratic committeeperson for the City of Philadelphia and an active member of both the Women’s Committee of Philadelphia250 and the Friends of Moyamensing Point, a local pocket park. She also serves on the Villiger Executive Council of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School. Susan lives in the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia with her husband, Matt—a high school math teacher and academic coach—their son, John Matthew, a student at St. Joe’s Prep and a competitive rower, and a flame-point Siamese rescue cat named Lila. Akscin Vice President & Treasurer John is passionate about executing the legacy of his aunt, Ann B. Zekauskas. Raised on a family farm on Eastern Long Island, New York, he understands the value of fresh produce, berries, and fruits. His mom, Nell Zekauskas Akscin, was Ann’s older sister, and as a Registered Nurse, imparted the importance of good nutrition and proper food preparation to her children. After graduating from St. Louis University, John spent more than 45 years in healthcare management, including 15 years in federal policy advocacy. John is one of the nation’s foremost experts in Medicare. He is renowned for his expertise in federal legislative and regulatory issues affecting health care providers, patients, and care givers. In 1985, John worked with a group of cancer physicians to pioneer the concept of independent cancer treatment centers which are prevalent today. It is this experience that allows John to use his expertise to carry on Ann’s mission to advocate, collaborate, and educate stakeholders in food and nutrition. In addition to his role with his family’s foundation, John serves on the board of directors of the Confera Group, a medical conference organization. He is past president of the Specialty and Biotech Distributors Association of America. John is Grand Knight of his local Knights of Columbus Council. John serves on a number of national advisory boards focused on public policy in health care. He published several articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He also served on the board of directors of the Illinois Chapter of the American Cancer Society. John received his management education at St. Louis University. He has been a regular guest speaker at industry conferences and corporate meetings, and served as guest faculty member at St. Louis University, Indiana University, University of Alabama, Birmingham, and the University of Miami, Florida. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. Zekauskas - Ann, circa 1960 Ann Barbara Zekauskas was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, in 1927. The daughter of Lithuanian immigrants, John Matthew Zekauskas, a coal miner, and Anna Mary Sadaukas, a homemaker, Ann was the third youngest of seven children, including Blanche, Nell, Raymond, Laurie, John, and Betty. Ann graduated from Kingston High School and pursued higher education at the Pennsylvania State University, where she was a competitive swimmer, a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and several honor societies, and worked at the Daily Collegian. She spent summers working in restaurants on Cape Cod. After earning a degree in Home Economics in 1950, Ann moved to New York City, where she promptly created an entirely new profession in the burgeoning field of television food advertising, becoming the first notable freelance food stylist. Ann was a true pioneer in food advertising, both in print and television, and her career spanned more than 60 years and thousands of projects. Her expertise in making everyday food look impossibly delicious was much sought after by advertising agencies, photographers, and film directors around the world. A member of the Screen Actors Guild, Ann was renowned for her work with ice cream. She once said about working with delicate food under hot studio lights, “No food is really an insoluble problem if you know what you’re doing.” Ann was a mentor to others in her industry, a volunteer within her community on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and a prominent member of her family. She taught her many nieces and nephews the necessity of proper nutrition, the benefits of cooking good food, and the joy of preparing a gathering. Above all, she stressed the importance of education — as she well knew that it could be transformational. Ann passed away in 2014.
